Latticework
The Latticework Baby Blanket is my newest blanket design.
I have had quite a few requests to design a baby blanket, worked all in one piece with minimal finishing. So, I started sampling a few different ideas and yarns and thought about what this could look like.
And this is the result - Latticework.
Latticework has a very simple all-over textured pattern and is worked in a single colour. Every right-side row is a knit row and the pattern is created by working a combination of knit and purl stitches on the wrong side. The stitch pattern can be worked from the written instructions or from the chart or, if you are like me, a bit of a combination of both.
The pattern is suitable for a newer knitter ready to tackle a larger project. You will need to be confident with casting stitches on and off, and able to work both knit and purl stitches across the same row. There is no seaming or knitting up of stitches for the borders. The only finishing required is to sew in the yarns ends.
The blanket is knit backwards and forwards in rows on a circular needle. A circular needle is needed to fit all the stitches and I find an added benefit of this is that all the weight of the blanket as you knit sits in your lap rather than as a weight hanging off your needles.
The chart is a useful way to see what the knitting will look like and to help count your rows. The images show the alternating panels of stocking stitch, bordered by garter stitch. The combination of garter stitch and stocking stitch and the alternating stocking stitch panels, all help the blanket to sit quite flat - no rolling or curling at the edges. The fabric is enhanced by a light blocking at the end.
I have used two different cotton/cotton blend yarns in my pictured samples.
The blue and cream blankets have been made in Fibra Natura Cottonwood which is a 100% organic cotton and is widely available in a lovely range of colours.
The yellow blanket is made in Patons Cotton Blend 8 ply which is 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. It is also widely available and comes in 28 beautiful colours.
I chose a cotton/cotton blend yarn for this project as an alternative to a wool and as a lighter layer for the summer.
Cotton gives lovely stitch definition and wears well - both yarns can take a gentle machine wash. But equally this blanket could be made in wool or a wool blend for a warmer layer.
The blanket is a very useful size. It measures approximately 75cm wide and 85cm long when finished. Suitable for wrapping up a newborn, popping in the pram or car, using in the cot (although it won’t fully tuck in around the mattress) or laying baby on for tummy time.
As in all my patterns, I give a few tips and tricks to use as you knit - like where to join your new balls of yarn or how to work out if you have enough yarn to get to the end of a row.
So go ahead and enjoy making your own Latticework Blanket. You can purchase the pattern here.
