  • one each 4mm/US 6 and 4.5mm/US 7 circular needles, both 60cm/24ins long for small cowl circumference or 100cm/40ins long for large cowl circumference and a spare circular needle in a smaller size for finishing.

  • crochet hook and length of contrasting scrap yarn for provisional cast-on for cowl

  • one each 3.25mm/US 3, 4mm/US 6 and 4.5mm/US 7 circular needles all 40cm/16ins long for beanie

  • set of 4mm/US 6 double-pointed needles for working beanie crown

  • pompom maker for beanie (optional)

  • stitch markers and yarn needle

Tension

After wet blocking, the tension required is 24 sts and 29 rows to 10cm/4ins over colourwork pattern, worked in rounds using 4.5mm needles.
